Sixth graders recently put their creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills on display during an exciting egg drop challenge.

Working with materials including a package of smoothie straws and a roll of tape, students were tasked with building a protective structure capable of keeping an egg intact after a two-story drop.

After carefully planning and building their creations, the sixth graders gathered outside the school to put their inventions to the test. One by one, the structures were dropped from the second-floor window as classmates eagerly watched to see which designs would successfully protect their eggs from cracking.

The hands-on STEM activity challenged students to think like engineers as they tested ideas, analyzed results and discovered how creativity and thoughtful design can solve real-world problems. Whether their eggs survived the fall or not, every student gained valuable experience in collaboration, perseverance and the engineering design process.
