Exploring Language and Community Through French project

Eighth grade French students at Bridgehampton School recently completed a creative hands-on project titled My House/My Community, or “Ma Maison/Ma Communaute’,” transforming their classroom learning into a colorful visual showcase.
Led by French teacher Mrs. Kucheryavenko, students put their growing French vocabulary to work by designing detailed, custom maps of their ideal neighborhoods. Each layout featured local businesses, community landmarks and street signs thoughtfully named in honor of their classmates and friends. The assignment culminated with every student presenting their neighborhood plan entirely in French to their peers.
What makes this achievement particularly special is that the majority of these students are native Spanish speakers. By taking on French, these dedicated multilingual learners are tackling a third language, an impressive choice that highlights their appreciation for world cultures.
"They did such an amazing job, and they deserve to be commended for making the choice to learn another language," said Mrs. Kucheryavenko.
The vibrant project models are currently posted in the school hallway outside their room, where visitors, faculty and fellow students can admire the hard work of Bridgehampton's eighth grade class.
