The third grade social studies class went on a walking trip to the Town
of Southampton’s Highway Departments’ Bridgehampton “Barn” to learn
about our community and how it is kept safe and clean. On the way,
students wore safety gloves, hard hats and vests and collected garbage
along the route. Once they arrived, they received a demonstration lesson
on safety and had the opportunity to sit in different equipment
including the Town’s bulldozer, sidewalk sweeper, and plow truck.
Students completed different activities, including hammering, shoveling,
digging and learned how to properly use a screwdriver, a rake and a
wheelbarrow. They were complimented on their efforts to and from the job
site on their help in keeping our community clean and they truly had a
great time! Highway Superintendent Mr. Alex Gregor provided Mister
Softee Ice Cream as a special treat and as a thanks to the students for
helping out the Highway Department. Thank you to Mr. and Ms. Harrison
for coordinating the details of this educational event for our students.
