March is National Nutrition Month and thanks to the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County and its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education federal grant program, Bridgehampton elementary school students were able to learn the importance of nutrition with family and consumer science teacher, Jenna Pluta and CCE Suffolk’s senior bilingual nutritionist, Marta Blanco.

With the help of USDA’s MyPlate initiative students reviewed what a balanced meal looks like and explored topics like where our food comes from and “how we can grow our own food.? The students also learned about how we can be thankful for our food and how to reduce food waste.

The agricultural bounty of Long Island’s East End makes many of our students and families familiar with the important process of how to grow your own food at home. Some students shared how their families grow crops like tomatoes, peppers and basil in their home gardens. “Plants grow just like we grow!” remarked one of Bridgehampton’s second grade students.
