Students in Ms. Conklin’s sixth grade class participated in a distance
learning event with a representative from the Challenger Learning
Center. The students worked on Operation Montserrat, an electronic
mission that challenged them to apply their science and math skills to
an authentic crisis situation. During the interactive Smartboard lesson,
the student specialists served as members of a team: volcano, hurricane
monitoring, evacuation and communication. The program is aimed to help
build students’ enthusiasm for science and math, improve
problem-solving and critical thinking skills and teaches the importance
of teamwork and communication. They are now well trained and will strive
to save the people of Montserrat from an approaching hurricane or an
erupting volcano. Thank you to Mr. Kaiser and Ms. Conklin for organizing
this educational opportunity.
