The eighth grade class participated in the 2019 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition for K-12 students, which engages the next generation in real world problem solving with a strong emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math concepts.

“ExploraVision challenges students to envision and communicate new technology that could exist 20 years in the future through collaborative brainstorming and research of current science and technology,” technology teacher Judiann Carmack-Fayyaz said.

Three students – Melanie Braia, Jonah Posner and Ryeasia Walker – worked together on a paper that created a modified wind turbine that could extract humidity from the atmosphere to create a supply of fresh drinking water. Their work placed in the top 10 percent of all students who participated nationally and won an Honorable Mention for their research paper.
